Water heater (Immersion heater)

  • Hello,

We have read many threads here and there saying that using 16A relay might not be sufficient to handle an immersion heating element (IHE) which is 240v 3KW, possible increase of shelly temperature and burned out results. Any suggestion of another solution for example an extra conductor between the shelly 1PM and the IHE ? So that the shelly relay switch the conductor and the conductor to switch on/off the IHE? Any wiring suggestion would appreciate.

  • I think you would either need to check if your heater has a separate control input to turn it on or off which wouldn't switch the load, or you would need to install a higher rated relay/contactor which would control the load.

  • IMHO in most cases an immersion heater is a simple “Tauchsieder” with a mains plug only and no other control elements?!

  • We have a heater switch that switches on/off the heating element. And we would like to have this switch connected with the shelly 1PM so that we can switch it on and off with the current switch or remotely.

Yes it is something like this: Heating Element

How can we wire a conductor? Will the conductor be inserted in the switch panel where the other MCBs are and the shelly behind the heater switch?

  • It would be an option to add a relay/contactor to the Switch Panel, but then you would need to have the switched wire running from local switch to switch panel in order of being able to activate/deactivate the relay/contactor and another wire running from relay/contactor to your heater.

    This might be overkill.

Example of a type to be installed in Switch Panel:

If you allready have a Shelly, it could be worth to temporary install it, in order to see, if it would overheat and turn off when controling your heater, as the load might just be on the border of Shellies capability.
