new Shelly Dimmer2 with HomeAssistant offline after 8hrs, restart required

  • Hi everyone, I hope someone can help me with this one :)

Yesterday I installed a new Shelly Dimmer 2.

I did not connect any switches yet, I only connected the Dimmer 2 to existing wiring to the GU10 lights and the power source.

The (brown) Line is connected to the second L from the left of the Dimmer 2

The (black) switch wire to/from the lights is connected to the O on the right of the Dimmer 2.

I did not change any wiring on the ceiling lights. So the ceiling lights have a (black) switch wire and a (blue) Neutral wire, where the black switch wire is coming from the Dimmer 2.

    Please see attached image.

Using this wiring schema the Dimmer 2 powered up yesterday and I connected it to my WiFi. This worked fine. I also configured it in my Shelly app and I was able to make changes to the configuration and save it. I was even able to switch the ceiling lights via the Shelly app and my HomeAssistant setup.

But then, after about 8 hours.... the Dimmer 2 did not respond anymore, it did not respond to the Shelly app and also no response from HomeAssistant. The device appeared offline.

So I removed the (brown) Line from the Shelly to turn it off, connected the (brown) Line again to turn it on. And yes everything was working again....... but only for about 7-8 hours.

The Shelly Dimmer 2 is running software version: 20210909-150154/v1.11.4-DNSfix-ge6b2f6d

It is connected to my 2.4Ghz Wifi with Excellent signal strength

What can be the issue? is it the wiring? do I really need a (blue) Neutral to be connected to the Dimmer 2?

thanks in advance for you support.

  • Which load is connected to the Dimmer?

    - if you install the Device without neutral line the minimum load for the lights is 10 watts. For less than 10 watts a bypass is required in order to make it stable work.

    - it is also mandatory to connect dimmable lights , non-dimmable LEDs may work but it's often not stable.

Was the dimmer calibrated properly with trailing edge?

  • Thank you for the quick response.

    - At the moment there is NO Neutral wire connected to the Dimmer2

    - There is NO bypass installed

    - There are 3 GU10 LED spots connected to the Dimmer2

    - When at 100% these spots pull 15W

    - Currently the LED's are TRÅDFRI bulb GU10 WS 400lm LED's (according to the IKEA site these are not dimmable)

I left the spots on this entire night and the Dimmer2 is now still reachable.

For another setup, I have a Dimmer1 connected to non-dimmable GU10 spots and this works fine, however this has a Neutral connected, so a little bit different setup)

  • Currently the LED's are TRÅDFRI bulb GU10 WS 400lm LED's

TRÅDFRI bulbs are (as you already mentioned) not dimmable via a trailing edge / leading edge dimmer..

Shelly Dimmer2 needs dimmable LEDs and a finished calibration in order to properly work..

  • Okay, so this might be the problem then. Dimmer2 requires dimmable LED's. ;(

Can this issue be solved with a Neutral connected to the Dimmer2? or is it mandatory to use dimmable LED's with the Dimmer2?

And is it correct to assume that the Dimmer1 with Neutral connected does support non-dimmable LED's?
