Shelly Dimmer 2 without N - flickering problem with 2 and 3 bulbs

  • Hi,

I have installed a Shelly Dimmer 2 with 3 dimmable Philips bulbs 3.4W, attached. The lamps are exactly same.

I experience frequent and random flickering, with all the calibration methods I tried (with and w/o By-pass option set, with and w/o auto load detection set).

The Shelly has been installed on the wall without N, so I use a by pass module on the lights. I saw other threads having similar problem with N present, so I thought this is different problem to report separately.

I have also tried the antiflickering debounce option with a few values (80, 100, 150), it didn't help.

Flickering does not happen when dimmer is set at < 30%

When I disconnect any two of the three lamps, calibrate and operate with one lamp (any of the three) the operation has no flickering, it's perfect. I also tried to connect a second and the third lamp using the calibration created with one, but it didn't help. After connecting the second, flickering starts.

Any ideas what is the problem and how to solve? Why more than 1 lamp connected creates the problem?

The firmware of Shelly Dimmer 2 is 20211109-131033/v1.11.7-g682a0db.

  • Update.

Today I connected N to the shelly dimmer 2. I used an external cable for N, just to test whether connecting N would solve the problem.

The result is that the dimming works perfect with the N connected.

My conclusion based on the observations here is:

    1. The specific Shelly Dimmer 2 (device and framework) does not work OK with more than one dimmable bulbs connected, without N to the Shelly, using by-pass.

    2. The specific Shelly Dimmer 2 (device and framework) work OK with one dimmable bulb, without N, using by-pass.

    3. The specific Shelly Dimmer 2 (device and framework) work OK with one, two, three dimmable bulbs, with N connected to the Shelly.

Hope this information is useful to someone. Perhaps to Shelly people, too, to solve the problem present without N and with more than 1 bulb, if solvable in firmware.

I think we can close this thread now, although it's unresolved, because I will now install a permanent N cable to the location of the switch (I have to dig the wall and open some electrical boxes to bring the N cable to the box), so I will not be able anymore to troubleshoot the original problem of this thread.
