Connecting Dimmer2 to bedside lights

  • Dear Shelly Support,

I have a question that I couldn't find an answer to. I am trying to connect my two bedside lights to one shelly dimmer. These are regular night stand lights that use small bulb.

The question I am facing right now is with the polarity of the cable that is coming from the electric socket. Since there is no distinction between line and neutral on an electric socket, would this configuration work? In other words, if the line cable happens to go to the N input and the neutral goes to L, would that fry the dimmer, or would it still work?

    Many thanks for your help.

  • If the box with Shelly Dimmer2 is self contained (mains plug and jacks for the lamps with no other connections), this arrangement will work. The box with Dimmer2 may contain a manual switch or button to switch the lamp. Otherwise you could switch the lamp via App or WebUI only. Please have a look at the connection diagrams in the „lexicon“!

  • vielen dank for your answer.

However, I am still confused. I looked at the diagrams, and in all of them it clearly shows that the line goes to line and neutral goes to neutral. I had this particular dimmer previously connected inline with a wall mounted light (diagram), now I am trying to do the same thing, but, the position of L and N in this case will depend on how you insert the plug into the electric socket. So, if you say this arrangement will work, this means it should be fine if the polarity is switched between L and N, right?

BTW, I don't care about control or using the switch inputs, since this will be controlled by a smart button via home assistant.

OK, I just closed my eyes, held my breath, and plugged it in, and it worked :D

    Thanks again for your answer!

  • Perfect! You should connect as shown in the sketch. Be careful to mount this guarded against accidental contact! Polarity (live and neutral) is not relevant...
