Battery Life Question

  • Hi there,

I have a motion sensor in our utility room. This has some movement in the morning and evening, but is otherwise a quiet room in terms of activity. I'm stunned by the battery consumption over time. I've lost 8% in 24 hours - which seems high. I'm not accessing its web interface. The Device is configured with a DHCP reservation, using ColoT. Is this just normal and should be expected? [see attachments for battery consumption and movement triggers over the same time period]

  • Which firmware are you using? I have had a Shelly Motion on the v2.0.0 firmware for just over 5 months, and it consumed around 5.8% per month. I just updated it to 2.0.5 because it stopped working at 69% battery level. When I tried to revive it on the charger, it came back alive with a battery level of around 45%. Did you charge it to 100% in Home Assistant or till the red charge light would no longer turn on?

Things that may affect your motion sensor battery life is poor reception by your AP and/or sensor, the WiFi radio then needs to be used at its highest powersetting and transmission retries will also sap the battery level. The battery consumption does not look normal if you ask me, but you should also check if you see any registration/deregistrations of the Shelly Motion on your WiFi accesspoint during the use with Home Assistant. If it is reregistering a lot, that might explain the high battery usage figures.

In that five month period I had the MQTT and CoIoT protocols but Shelly cloud or time sync was not enabled (to conserve power on the connectivity, I had no usecase for disabling the sensor on any interval)

Every time the Motion has something to send, it has to register with the router via DHCP.

    Assign a fixed IP.

    Full agreement with the explanations.

All my motions have fixed ip (in the motion):

  • Hi,

is there any progress with this topic? I´m in the same boat and just thinking about fixed wiring to Shelly motion because I´m getting tired of charging it every 10 days.

I´m also using it in Hoe Assistant with good Unifi WIFI. But mine is sitting outside (no direct sunlight or rain, but sometinmes cold temperatures und high moisture). First I thought it´s because of the low temperatures, but this shouldn´t be hat big of a deal right now.

    Cheers Tom

  • chris897 How often does it connect to the AP (the Unifi in your case Tom)? And for what reason? My Shelly Motion is mounted on the wall, near the ceiling, out of reach for even the tallest person, ladder required.

The past four days looked like this in HA:

So mine is not triggering on the vibration sensor , and the amount of light change is also minimal, since it is not getting any direct sunlight.
