Shelly WiFi disconnects with multiple access points

  • I recently purchased 2 x Shelly UNI, 1 x Plus 1PM, and 1 x Plus 2PM devices. The setup went smoothly, but I soon encountered Shelly WiFi connectivity issues, similar to many other users. My Wi-Fi network is robust and has been operating flawlessly. It comprises 5 x Ruckus R310 WiFi access points (APs) wired to a 1Gbps PoE Ethernet switch. I manage this WiFi network using the Ruckus Unleashed management platform. I've set the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi channels specifically to channels 1, 6, and 11.

    The Shelly devices are positioned close to one of the APs, exhibiting RSSI values of approximately -40dBm. There aren't any interference problems, and other devices connected to the same WiFi radio operate flawlessly, with 0% packet loss. There's also no apparent reason for the Shelly devices to attempt associating with any other APs that offer a weaker signal. After some troubleshooting, I began to suspect that the Shelly WiFi issue might be related to WiFi roaming, especially after noticing some disassociation packets originating from the Shelly client. As a result, I set up an old Ruckus 7982 AP with a distinct SSID and connected the Shelly devices to it, which resolved the issue.

    Subsequently, I continued troubleshooting on the original WiFi network, aiming to pinpoint the root cause of the issue. I turned off fast roaming (802.11r) and narrowed the channel width to 20Mhz. Unfortunately, these steps made no difference. It appears that the Shelly devices struggle to maintain a steady WiFi connection when multiple WiFi APs are present in a network.

    Naturally, I wouldn't prefer setting up dedicated APs with unique SSIDs exclusively for Shelly devices, as the current solution is far from ideal. Are there any other suggestions to rectify this Shelly WiFi connectivity issue?

  • I got exactly the same behaviour in an network with 3-access points and same ssid on an:

    * shelly-motion2

    Running firmware:

    * 20231122-131719/v2.2.2@a458c94d

    And the problem was patched by adding a new wifi-ssid locked to one access-point only.

    However the response times for ping is pending between 10 and 1500 ms which indicates other problems with the shelly-motion2 as well.

  • Same story with Zyxel environment and 5 Ap. Bunch of shelly 1 working like a Charme since years, but motion and motion 2 connect to wifi but ping not possible and offline in the app. Hope shelly will do something as that is definitely not the quality we had until now. I also hope other shellys like pm 2 mini do not have the same issue.
