Which Shelly EM to buy advise

  • Hi all

Looking to buy my first Shelly as Id like to monitor power usage on the whole house.

Im in the UK and Ive checked the biggest breaker in my consumer unit is 100amp

So I think ill go for the 120amp Shelly EM (single clamp option)

Just wondering what the 2 clamp options are for really - reason being is that I also have a separate supply to the kitchen also

I assume it all comes off the main box anyway - just wondering if it would be a good idea to have 2 separate clamps or not really

    Thanks all

  • I live in UK also. 100A fuse on meter tail from the grid is pretty standard in houses. It’s that size to protect the cable, not that they anticipate you going anywhere near that much.

Breakers on different circuits after that will be lower eg 30A.

You are unlikely to go above 50A total unless you do something like turn 6 electric kettles on at once.

I am planning to use a 50A Shelly EM on my main meter tail. Presumably above 50A will clip the reading rather than damage anything.

  • Are you running a house on 1 phase only? Then a 100 amp fuse might be OK. I have a 3-phase connection to the grid with a (iirc) 63 amp fuse on each phase before my meter (sealed by the power company). House main fuses after meter before going into the different breakers for the circuits are 35 amp each. Individual breakers are 16 amp each.

For your 1 phase grid connection a shelly em with one clamp is sufficient. I'd go for a clamp sufficient for my connection as i don't know how the shellys handle more amps than a clamp can read.

To monitor my grid connection I use a shelly-3em whitch comes bundled with three 100 amp clamps by default. I'd prefer smalles clamps, but the bundled ones are calibrated to the device and clearly marked (A, B, C) to connect to the corresponding phase of the shelly-3em device.

  • Hi,

replying to this thread as my question is very similar (as opposed to starting a new one). Complete novice with Shelly products but like the OP I want to use an em device to monitor my whole house electric usage. I've attached a couple of photos of my (very dated) main box and fuse panel.

    1. Will a 50amp clamp be sufficient?

    2. How can I power the em device? I'm not a sparky and frankly anything to do with electricity is a bit daunting.

    3. I have a power socket nearby (within 7 metres) and would be happy to wire a plug with a 7m dual core cable. Is that a suitable/advised way of powering the device.

    4. What amp plug would i need? I assume a 3amp for such a low power usage device.

    5. Which of the cables coming into/out of the meter should i connect the clamp to?

Many thanks in advance for any replies.

Then the journey to integrate it with Home Assistant will begin =O
